Rules
The goal of the game is to make your hand get as close to 21 points as possible without going over. More importantly, you must achieve a higher point value than does the dealer. If your hand has a value greater than 21 points this is called “busting” and the hand cannot win.
The point value of cards depends on their rank. 2’s count as 2 points, 3’s count as 3 points, etc. All face cards count as 10 points. Aces count as either 1 point or as 11 points, depending on what helps you the most.
An ideal hand is an ace and a card worth 10 points (either a 10 or a face card). This adds up to 21 points, and since it is achieved with only two cards it is called a “blackjack.” Blackjacks beat all other hands.
If you have selected “five card charlie” from the settings screen, you automatically win if your hand comprises five cards and you don’t bust.
If you and the dealer tie, it is called a “push.”
Before each hand, you decide on how much to bet. If you win, you win an amount equal to your bet. If you get a blackjack and win, you get $3 for every $2 you bet.
The dealer is dealt one card face down; you must play your cards prior to seeing the dealer’s “hole card.”
After being dealt your two starting cards, you may choose to “double.” This means you take one more card, and double your bet. If you select “Reno Rules” on the settings screen, you may double only on 10 or 11.
If you are dealt two cards of identical rank you may choose to “split.” This requires that you pay in an amount equal to your starting bet. Your hand will be split into two hands, each of which may be played separately, and each of which may win or lose separately. If you do not select “double after split” from the preferences screen, you cannot double after splitting.
You may “hit” (that is, request additional cards) until you bust, or until you achieve five card charlie.
If you don’t want additional cards, you may “stand.”
After your turn, the dealer goes. The dealer must hit up until he achieves a certain score (determined by the settings), and then must stand.
Many of the rules are configurable on the “settings” screen.
