Some say Demon Solitaire was invented by Canfield, a Saratoga, New York casino owner, to separate inebriated patrons from their cash. Others say that Demon Solitaire was sent by dark forces to frustrate and torment serious solitaire players.
Often called the most difficult of all solitaires, Demon, or Canfield Solitaire is a game of skill that is easy to learn, but tough to master.
Rules
The game is played with a standard 52-card deck, without jokers. You are dealt four columns (“tableu piles”) of cards face up, one card in each column. There is also a reserve, dealt face down, except for the top card.
There are four “foundations” at the top of the screen. One card is dealt to the foundation. This becomes the “base card” for all four foundations. (Note: other cards may automatically end up in the foundation if they match the value of the base card and they are dealt initially to the tableaus). Your job is to build each foundation upward, starting at the base card, in suit. In other words, on the foundation you may play the two of clubs only on the ace of clubs. You can wrap - so you can place an ace of clubs on a king of clubs.
You build the tableu piles downward, alternating in color. For example, a three of diamonds can be played on a four of clubs or a four of spades. If a tableu is empty, you may move a King (or a pile of cards with a King at the top) into it. You may wrap here, just as with the foundations.
You may recycle the stock as many times as you wish.
Each hand costs you $50 (fake money, of course!) Each card you move to the foundations wins you back $5.
Game Play
To deal cards to the “waste” pile, tap the “stock.” If the “stock” is empty, tap the empty spot.
To move cards, tap and drag them. To move some or all of a pile, tap and drag the top card; the rest will follow. When you release your finger, the appropriate set of cards will move to their new position.
You may also double-tap cards to move them (or a pile) to an appropriate location automatically. Additionally, cards will automatically move from the Reserve and Waste to the tableaus or foundation, without any intervention on your part.
Use the toolbar at the bottom of the screen to choose various modes and perform various functions:
Play: returns you to the game board
Score: shows you various statistics about your playing history
New Hand: end the current game and deal a fresh set of cards
